Great Backyard Bird Count 2011 – The Numbers

I have to say, it was probably the worst GBBC on record here at my house.  All four days of it.  I know the weather surely had something to do with it.  We had a crazy warm week (saw the first insects of the year, outside the house that is) followed by sleet, rain and COLD.  No doubt all our neighborhood birds were enjoying a well deserved protein meal the first day of GBBC, followed by hunkering down in the bushes days 2, 3 & 4.  Oh well, it is what it is.

No count, no birds around feeders to count.  Went out to work in the yard the weather was so nice.  Probably scared away any birds that wanted seed over the yummy insects that appeared for the first time all winter.

25-30 degrees, COLD, rained all day long.
Dark-eyed Junco 3
House Sparrow M1 F2
Northern Cardinal F1
Coopers Hawk 1 (snagged a chipmunk right out of the driveway while I was wondering “where are all the birds?” got my answer).  Gave up on counting after the hawk.   Pretty sure this is the same hawk that got a Dark-eyed Junco (chased him into my picture window) last week.  Perched in the same exact hiding spot in the pines.

Here’s to next year birders.
