Proof spring is right around the corner!

Look at those beautiful colors peaking through!  I just love seeing the goldfinches molt. American Goldfinch Alternate Molt

This male is molting into in his alternate plumage.  I saw another male further along with his molting over the weekend at the feeder.  Spring is surely right around the corner!  Now we are just waiting for the Dark-eyed Junco’s to make their exodus.

Lobotomy Goldfinch

Yep, that’s what we’ve been calling this guy. Not sure exactly what is going on (accident, molting) but he has been showing up to the feeder like this for a few weeks now. My husband even noticed and said “where’s that birds head?”
